Kiphire Authorities Impose Prohibitory Orders Following Community Tensions

Kohima: Tensions between the Yimkhiung and Tikhir communities forced authorities to lock down parts of the Kiphire district. District Magistrate Temsuwati Longkumer issued an order on October 10 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The move aims to prevent violence and preserve peace in the area.

The mandate covers the Pungro Sub-Division, including Kiusam Circle, but excludes Khongsa Block. Specific trouble spots mentioned include Zaonger, Pokphur, and Longtsungser. Security remains tight. Large groups are now illegal.

Gatherings of five or more people are banned if they threaten public order. Carrying firearms, sharp weapons, or items meant for intimidation is prohibited, unless you are an officer on duty. The order also bars rallies, unauthorized public meetings, and the spread of inflammatory rumors or messages. Officials warn that acts of provocation or mobilization will not be tolerated.

The District Magistrate called for calm across the district. He stated, "The District Magistrate has also appealed to village authorities, community leaders and the public to cooperate with the administration, exercise restraint and refrain from provocative activities to maintain peace and communal harmony."

The Superintendent of Police and local magistrates will enforce these rules immediately. Violators face legal action. These restrictions stay in effect until further notice.
