Red Cross Clears Mud-Blocked Highway Culvert in Mon

Kohima: Volunteers from the Red Cross and local residents cleared a mud-choked culvert on NH 702 in Mon Town on Tuesday. The blockage stood for nearly three weeks following a mudslide. It forced rainwater onto the highway and flooded nearby properties. The job took four hours.

Citizens previously flagged the drainage failure to local administrators. Those officials demanded the public cover fuel costs for a JCB machine, a request that stalled any repair work. The Concerned Citizens group later appealed to the Red Cross for help. The organization acted immediately.

Residents cheered the successful operation. They thanked Red Cross member Lucy for providing the JCB and secretary Nyamto Wangsa for managing the cleanup logistics. The project serves as a reminder of the fragility of local infrastructure. "The incident underscored the need for timely maintenance of culverts and drainage systems along highways, especially during the monsoon season, to prevent flooding and safeguard residents," the group stated. The crew cleared the mess, ending weeks of neighborhood inconvenience.
