Kohima: More than 2,000 people gathered at Jalukie Town Square on Friday to demand the unconditional release of six Naga civilians allegedly abducted by Kuki militants in Manipur. The rally, organised by the Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland, sought swift government intervention to resolve the ongoing crisis.

According to NZPO president Zandi Domta, 18 villagers from Konsakhul were initially abducted on May 13 near Leilon Vaiphei village. While 12 individuals have since been released, six remain in captivity. Zeme Council Nagaland president Asiakpe Ernest Sephe noted that the victims were innocent civilians returning from a wedding when they were seized.

ZBN president K. Francis Zeliang condemned the use of civilians as bargaining chips, calling the act a violation of basic human rights. He criticised both the Manipur government and central authorities for failing to curb the activities of armed militant groups despite the imposition of President’s Rule. Participants submitted a memorandum to the Nagaland governor through the deputy commissioner of Peren, demanding legal action against the perpetrators.

Community leaders and tribal representatives joined the event to express solidarity with the affected families. Speakers warned that the continued inaction of authorities risks further escalating regional tensions. Family members of the victims thanked the public for their support during the rally, while leaders from various Zeliangrong organisations called for continued unity until the captives are safely returned.
