Shillong: Hima Langrin residents descended on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council headquarters on July 22. They demanded the immediate removal of Syiem Nongtei Singh Syiemiong. Police deployed a large contingent to maintain order as protesters waved placards and chanted against the traditional chief.
Protesters argue the Syiem violated customary practices, misused his authority, and treated communal land as private family property. They further allege he blocked residents over 18 from joining the Hima Dorbar. The crowd demands a referendum to elect a new leader. A delegation met with Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh Rynjah and Executive Member Denzil Raynard Chen to press the issue.
The meeting resulted in no immediate action. The council claimed the case involves massive records that require thorough study. Dissatisfied with the delay, the delegation delivered a final warning. "We have given the KHADC 15 days. If no decision is taken within that period, we will return to the Council and stage an indefinite hunger strike until our demand is met," the leaders told reporters.
The standoff continues. Council officials promised to examine the files before ruling on the reinstatement of the Syiem. Residents remain unmoved.
