Shillong: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) wants the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to pull the plug on 44 trading licences. KHNAM working president Thomas A Passah submitted a formal request to the council's Chief Executive Member on Friday. He claims these non-tribal firms hide behind local names to bypass strict regulations.
RTI records show none of the 44 businesses hold legal partnership registration certificates. Instead, the firms rely entirely on affidavits of undertaking. Passah argues the indigenous partners hold almost zero profit shares. The local names serve only as a front to secure permits. Passah stated, "none of the 44 entities had submitted registration certificates establishing them as legally recognised partnership firms."
KHNAM pointed to a specific parking lot deal involving Bawri as a prime example of these questionable joint operations. The group insists these setups violate the Meghalaya Benami Transactions Prohibition Act of 1985. KHNAM expects immediate action. The party threatened to drag the case to higher authorities if the council continues to sit on its hands. The KHADC did not respond to requests for comment.
