Shillong: Protesters from Hima Langrin mobbed the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council headquarters on July 22. They want Syiem Nongtei Singh Syiemiong out. Police lined the perimeter to keep the peace as the crowd marched with placards and slogans.
A delegation met with Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh Rynjah and Executive Member for Elaka Affairs Denzil Raynard Chen. They sought a quick firing. The council leaders refused to act on the spot. Officials claimed the request involved, "voluminous records that required detailed examination."
The meeting stalled. Angry residents set a 15-day deadline for a final response. If the council stays silent, the group will return to the office. They promised to start an indefinite hunger strike until their demand is met.
