Guwahati: Cachar Police pulled over an oil tanker in Jirighat yesterday and uncovered a massive stash of booze. The tanker held 508 cartons of liquor in a hidden compartment. Officers caught the driver during a standard checkpoint operation on the Silchar-Imphal National Highway.

The team acted on a tip-off. Jirighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Kumar Nath led the operation. They intercepted the truck, registered as NL-01-G-6208, while it traveled from Silchar toward Jiribam. Police arrested the driver, Roushan Kumar Roy, a resident of Garal in Guwahati.

Authorities estimate the illicit haul is worth several lakh rupees. The setup mimicked plots seen in cinema, using a custom-built space to bypass detection. Investigators are now working to track the source and final destination of the alcohol. "Jirighat Police have launched an investigation to determine where the liquor was sourced and where it was intended to be delivered." They are also searching for accomplices connected to the smuggling run.
