Kohima: Elpis Society teamed up with the Phek District Administration and the Department of Social Welfare to host a drug awareness event at Government Higher Secondary School on June 18. Keynote speaker Velato Nienu of DISHA Phek outlined the goals of the national campaign, emphasizing that achieving a drug-free society requires prevention and community-wide action. Nienu shared his own experience with addiction to illustrate the severe consequences of substance abuse. He urged students to prioritize healthy life choices while advocating for empathy toward those in recovery. He noted, "Addiction is a disease requiring compassion, treatment, rehabilitation, and social support."
A technical session followed, led by Hierhotho Kajiri, who utilized a presentation to detail the physical and economic damage caused by drug and alcohol misuse. The event concluded with the participants taking a collective pledge to stay substance-free. By promoting awareness and social responsibility, organizers aim to help recovering individuals reintegrate into society with dignity.
