Outcry Grows Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Minor in Dimapur

Kohima: Student groups, human rights organizations, and government officials are calling for justice following the alleged sexual assault and physical abuse of a minor girl in Dimapur. The incident, which reportedly involves former student leader O. Watimeren Jamir and other suspects, has sparked widespread condemnation across the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton labeled the crime as disturbing and unacceptable. He emphasized that crimes against children have no place in a civilized society and expressed his solidarity with the survivor and her family. Patton confirmed that police have initiated an investigation and urged law enforcement to ensure a thorough, impartial process. He also cautioned the public and media to handle the case with sensitivity to protect the privacy and dignity of the minor.

The Western Sümi Students’ Union joined the chorus of disapproval, criticizing the decision to grant anticipatory bail to the accused. The union argued that cases involving minors should be handled strictly under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012. They warned that lenient treatment of such serious offenses threatens public confidence in the legal system and increases fear within the community.

The Human Rights Help Association Nagaland also condemned the violence as a barbaric act. These organizations are collectively urging authorities to expedite legal proceedings, reconsider the bail status of the suspects, and uphold human dignity by ensuring the perpetrators face strict legal consequences.
