ONGC Pipeline Leak Sparks Safety Fears in Assam’s Sivasagar District

Guwahati: A gas leak from an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation pipeline in the Silakuti Bhakat Gaon area of Nazira, Assam, has sparked significant safety concerns among local residents. The leak was identified in a section of the pipeline traversing agricultural land in the Sivasagar district. Officials confirmed they isolated the pipeline and halted the gas supply to prevent the situation from escalating.

Authorities stated the incident is now under control, with only residual gas escaping from the line. Repairs will commence once the remaining gas dissipates. Responding to public criticism, ONGC officials acknowledged the infrastructure is outdated and confirmed a proposal for its replacement is currently awaiting approval from competent authorities. They added that compensation for residents affected by the leak is under active consideration.

Local farmers and residents expressed frustration, claiming that signs of a leak have been visible for months. Villagers reported that vapour emissions increased significantly over the last day, leading to widespread anxiety. One resident noted the ongoing nature of the problem, with villagers claiming that "a slow leak had been continuing for nearly three months" prior to the current escalation.

Agricultural activities have been disrupted, as farmers fear using machinery near the damaged pipeline. Residents have urged the district administration and ONGC to perform a thorough safety assessment to prevent further incidents. At the time of this report, ONGC had not provided an official response regarding allegations of inadequate maintenance or oversight.
