Imphal: The North East Students Organisation (NESO) slammed police for using excessive force against demonstrators in New Delhi on July 20. Officers allegedly deployed tear gas, batons, and plainclothes units to break up the peaceful crowd. The group called these tactics a direct attack on democratic rights.
NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu issued a joint statement. They blamed the government for choosing repression over talk. "The disturbing scenes of force being used against unarmed students represent an alarming assault on democratic values and the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully assemble and express their grievances," the statement said.
The students originally gathered to protest frequent competitive examination paper leaks. They want better transparency, fairness, and integrity in national recruitment systems. NESO argues that systemic corruption ruins the hard work of millions of job aspirants. They claim these failures have shattered public trust.
The organization expressed support for the injured students. They urged the Central government to start a sincere dialogue immediately. Officials must provide accountability for the police conduct and deliver reforms to fix the broken examination process.
