Kohima: Nagaland's Village Development Board system hit its 50th year this week. Officials gathered at the 5th General Conference of the Mokokchung District VDB Association on Thursday to demand a total shakeup of the institution. They want better accountability and more inclusive policies for the 88 recognized villages across nine blocks in Mokokchung district.
Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma noted that the boards link traditional rule with modern state programs. He warned against complacency after five decades. Verma called for a hard look at the current rules and procedures to fix lingering confusion over roles. He insisted, "VDBs should serve the entire village and should not be treated as the property of a particular group or section of the community."
The DC pushed for better coordination between the government, village councils, and management committees. He wants VDBs to prioritize long-term assets like schools and health centers rather than quick, short-term fixes. He also urged leaders to boost local economies by identifying specific crops and building enterprises to keep youth in their home villages.
Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency Imyapangla reminded officials to follow department instructions closely to ensure funds reach the people. Village council leaders Mapuyanger and I. Shashimeren Walling also spoke at the event. The association elected Bendang Walling as president and Obangonen Jamir as general secretary to lead the group for the next three years.
