Kohima: Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir is pushing for stricter safety protocols and faster construction timelines following recent inspections of the Dimapur-Kohima and Kohima-Jessami highways. During his review of the projects on May 28 and 29, Jamir met with district officials, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, and various contractors to assess the state of regional infrastructure.

Addressing the press, Jamir pointed to significant safety gaps along the Dimapur-Kohima highway, specifically citing a lack of proper signage, warning systems, and barriers. He also noted that poor drainage maintenance has accelerated road damage. The MP warned that unauthorized openings in road dividers by local businesses and residents create unnecessary accident risks. He mandated that these gaps remain closed unless formally approved by officials and equipped with proper safety lighting.

While acknowledging that landslides and heavy rainfall present ongoing challenges, Jamir insisted that contractors remain accountable for their schedules. He noted that the Kohima bypass project will likely take another two years to finish due to land disputes and bridge construction delays. On the NH-29 route, the original contractor for the Patkai Bridge-Medziphema section was replaced due to poor performance, and a new riverside bridge is being planned to mitigate rockfall dangers.

Progress on the Kohima-Jessami road remains a point of concern. Jamir reported that repairs on the section between BSF Camp and Chakhabama must be completed within 20 days. He expressed frustration over the Chakhabama-Kikruma stretch, which is only 42 percent complete, putting the January 2026 deadline at risk after multiple contractor issues.
