Kohima: Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has announced a four-month period of intensive oversight to ensure national highway projects across the state meet their completion deadlines. Jamir, who also serves as president of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, warned that contractors failing to uphold these schedules will face formal action.

The announcement followed a series of site inspections conducted on May 28 and 29. Accompanied by district officials, representatives from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and contractors, Jamir evaluated the progress of the Dimapur-Kohima and Kohima-Jesami roads. During these visits, the MP assessed construction quality, drainage maintenance, and road safety measures.

Jamir identified several critical failures, noting that road safety infrastructure, such as signage and dividers along the Assam border-Kohima stretch, fell short of national standards. He also criticized the unauthorized placement of road dividers on the Dimapur-Kohima highway, which he stated have contributed to accidents. Furthermore, the MP highlighted concerns regarding blocked drainage systems, the theft of safety barriers, and illegal mining activities that have obstructed roads at over 35 locations.

While acknowledging that Nagaland’s rugged terrain and monsoon rains present significant challenges, Jamir insisted that agencies must be better prepared to manage these obstacles. He noted that most NHIDCL projects are slated for completion this year, though the Kohima bypass will likely require two more years due to bridge and land acquisition requirements.

Moving forward, the MP plans to coordinate weekly reviews with local administrations to enforce accountability. He confirmed that repair and maintenance work on the BSF Camp-Chakhabama road stretch has been scheduled for completion within 20 days, signaling a broader push for consistent infrastructure standards across the region.
