Kohima: Nagaland launched a mass immunization drive Sunday targeting 143,000 children under five years old. Officials set up 2,400 vaccination booths statewide to push the oral vaccine.

State Immunisation Officer Imkongtemsu Longchar kicked off the event at the Seikhazou Urban Primary Health Centre in Kohima. He pushed for steady vaccination work to prevent any return of the disease. India has been polio-free since 2014, and Nagaland has not recorded a case since 1997.

Longchar promoted the shots as a proven shield for kids. He told families, "The vaccine as safe, free and highly effective," while calling on parents to get their children to the booths on time.

The booth-based effort is just the start. Health workers begin door-to-door visits on Monday to track down any children who missed their dose during the Sunday rollout.
