Nagaland Launches Mass Polio Vaccine Drive for 143,000 Children

Kohima: Nagaland launched an intensive Pulse Polio drive this Sunday. Health officials target more than 143,000 children under five years of age. They want to ensure total coverage across the state.

State Immunization Officer Dr. Imkong Temsu Longchar started the campaign at the Seikhazou Urban Primary Health Centre in Kohima. He gave the first drops to young Andrea Odyuo. Dr. Longchar reminded parents that every child needs the oral vaccine regardless of their previous health history.

The state has stayed polio-free since 1997. India cleared the virus in 2014. Despite these wins, officials insist on constant vigilance to stop the virus from returning. Dr. Longchar warned, "If exposed to the virus, it can cause lifelong paralysis and disability."

The state aims to immunize 143,530 children total. Kohima deployed 57 booths, including 12 mobile teams. Districts like Dimapur set up 480 booths to reach over 43,000 kids. Mon established 239 booths, while Phek prepared 205.

Local leaders launched the drive across various districts. In Peren, Vekhohu Puro gave the first drops. In Mokokchung, Dr. Madhavi R. handled the kick-off. Wokha, Zunheboto, and Longleng also held formal ceremonies to get the work moving.

Health workers hit the ground running. They will conduct house-to-house visits through June 30 in many areas to find any children who missed the booth-based launch. Officials are urging all parents to cooperate and keep the state safe.
