Kohima: The Naga Students Federation has renewed its opposition to the state-mandated International Day of Yoga in local schools. The group argues that rescheduling the event from June 21 to June 22 fails to address the underlying issue of mandatory participation.
In a formal representation to the Nagaland Chief Secretary, the federation maintained that forcing schools to host the event infringes upon the rights of students and teachers. The organization acknowledged the health benefits of yoga but stressed that the practice carries religious and philosophical associations incompatible with local beliefs. The NSF stated, "The issue remains one of compulsion, imposition and the infringement of the rights and convictions of students, teachers and educational institutions."
The federation is calling on the state government to release a clear circular confirming that all participation is voluntary. They further demanded that school authorities face no pressure to host the event and that students or teachers face no discrimination for opting out. NSF President Mteisuding and Education Committee Convenor Pithungo Shitio signed the document, warning that the group will initiate stern democratic action if any form of coercion or intimidation occurs.
