Kohima: The Naga Students' Federation is calling on the state government to explicitly state that involvement in the International Day of Yoga, rescheduled for June 22, 2026, must remain voluntary. In a formal representation to the chief secretary, NSF president Medovi Rhi and education committee convenor Pithungo Shitio emphasized that while yoga has health benefits, it also carries cultural and religious connotations that may conflict with the personal convictions of some community members.
The federation warned that forcing participation on students or teachers is unacceptable. They have demanded an official circular confirming that no educational institution will be required to host the event and no staff or students will face administrative repercussions for opting out. The leadership stated, "NSF maintained that participation in yoga-related activities should remain a matter of personal choice and expressed concern over any attempt to make it mandatory for educational institutions."
The NSF stated that it is prepared to launch democratic protests if it uncovers evidence of coercion, intimidation, or pressure placed on schools. By urging a swift government clarification, the group aims to protect the individual freedoms and beliefs of all teachers and students across the state.
