Imphal: Protesters gathered at Kangla Gate in Imphal on Saturday evening to demand justice for six Liangmai Naga brothers killed during the ongoing Manipur crisis. The Justice for the Six Sons of Koubru United Committee, operating under the Joint Tribes Council, organized the candlelight vigil. Attendees held signs with the message: "We Stand for Justice. We Stand for Truth. Their lives matter. Their families matter. We will not forget."
The six victims died following an abduction and killing in May 2026. Their bodies remain at the JNIMS mortuary. Families refuse to claim the remains until officials meet their specific demands. Chingdinliu Panmei, president of the Rongmei Naga Luh Phuam, stated the community remains deeply dissatisfied with the government response. Panmei blamed Kuki narco-terrorists for the mutilation and death of the brothers.
The Joint Tribes Council submitted five key demands to authorities, including the immediate arrest and prosecution of all suspects. They also seek the end of the Suspension of Operations agreement with militant groups, the labeling of the Kuki National Front-P as a terrorist entity, the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, and the eviction of illegal villages. While the government claims some arrests, the community has received no written confirmation that these suspects match their submitted list.
Naga organizations have responded with an indefinite economic blockade on Kuki-Zo-inhabited areas. Meanwhile, the Kuki Civil Society Organizations Working Committee of Ukhrul suspended a planned counter-blockade. Leadership held talks in Kangpokpi and stated they are seeking a resolution to the economic crisis. They urged the public to stay calm while negotiations with authorities continue.
