Imphal: National Sports University Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chawdhary visited the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm at Lamphelpat. He inspected the site to see how locals protect the rare Manipuri Pony. The visit brought together several groups focused on the state's horse culture.
Manipuri Pony Society president Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan briefed Chawdhary on the collective work of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, the Manipur Equestrian Association, and his own society. These groups want to save the state's equine heritage and boost interest in polo. They demand change. MEA secretary general N. Ibungochoubi asked the university to make equestrianism a formal academic subject.
Chawdhary liked the pitch. He noted that the university might consult with the MEA and partner organizations to draft a plan. The Vice-Chancellor believes the local youth have deep talent in the saddle. He claimed, "Manipur's youth have significant potential in equestrian sports." With better training and international gear, he thinks the state can turn the discipline into a consistent medal winner.
The university remains open to new partnerships. Officials may explore research, degree programs, and practical training modules through institutional channels. The effort aims to bridge the gap between tradition and academic sport.
