Imphal: Inner Manipur Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam is demanding answers from the Union Home Ministry. He wants clarity on the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militants. The silence is deafening. Akoijam formally raised the issue under Rule 377 on August 11, following a notice submitted to the Speaker on August 7. He is still waiting for a response.
The MP questioned whether the government tracks compliance with the agreement’s ground rules. He highlighted reports of extortion and the murders of six Liangmai civilians by groups under the pact. He urged the Union Government to review the deal. If groups break the rules, he says, the government should scrap the arrangement entirely.
Akoijam has now written to the Lok Sabha Speaker to force the Ministry to answer. The government usually responds within a month, but that deadline has passed. Akoijam also slammed the state government over its readiness for a National Register of Citizens exercise. He noted the Manipur State Population Commission has operated without a chairperson since its 2023 inception. It has held only two meetings in three years.
The MP insists a credible verification process must happen before any census or delimitation work. He argued that the current displacement and chaos make accurate counting impossible. He referenced RTI responses that leave the status of 1951 records in doubt. Any citizenship check must be transparent, he said. Akoijam warned, "any NRC exercise in Manipur should distinguish citizens from non-citizens through a lawful and transparent process and should not be used to target any particular community."
He demanded an end to political games. Instead, he wants law and order restored to protect basic rights. Citizens deserve to return home.
