Manipur MP Demands Review of SoO Pact Amid Rising Violence

Imphal: Inner Manipur Lok Sabha MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam challenged the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups today. He brought the issue to the floor under Rule 377. The MP wants the Union Government to review or kill the pact entirely if these groups keep shaking down motorists on highways or committing crimes.

Bimol filed a formal notice back on August 7. He pointed to reports of systemic extortion. The core of his demand stems from the abduction and murder of six Liangmei civilians. He wants the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to verify these violations and axe the deal if the findings hold water.

Frustration boiled over regarding his attempt to discuss the National Register of Citizens. Officials pulled his question from the ballot despite it winning a spot for Question Hour. Bimol contacted the Lok Sabha Speaker to fight for the question, but the request died in committee. He stated, "He had written to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking restoration of the question, but it was not taken up."

The MP also tried to flag the recent surge of violence in the hill areas during Zero Hour. He aimed to demand accountability for the six Liangmei victims. The House adjourned early. The floor cleared before he could speak.
