Imphal: Manipur Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam is fed up with the Union Home Ministry. He is still waiting for answers on the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki armed groups. He raised these concerns under Rule 377 on August 11. Silence followed. More than a month has passed since he pressed for clarity on highway extortion and the specific terms of the deal.
Akoijam wants to see compliance reports. He has demanded to know if these groups are behind recent killings and illegal acts. He also brought up allegations involving the state deputy chief minister. "I have questioned whether the SoO is involved in all such illegal activities. I have even said that if the allegations are true, the SoO should be scrapped," he stated during a press conference at his home.
He is equally skeptical about the state government's plan for the National Register of Citizens. He points to the Manipur State Population Commission, formed March 30, 2023, as a hollow body. It lacks a chairperson, lacks experts, and has held only two meetings. He argues the state is unprepared to seal its porous borders or track illegal immigrants despite multiple public promises.
Central forces are everywhere. Yet, the violence persists. September saw a string of civilian deaths that the MP calls a failure of leadership. He accuses the central government of treating the Manipur crisis as a local burden rather than a national priority. He demands immediate accountability, urging federal officials to stop ignoring the state's escalating instability.
