Imphal: Congress MP Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam dismantled claims of stability in Manipur on October 19. He spoke at Raj Medicity Hospital in Imphal after visiting victims of the latest violent surge. The situation remains dire. Displaced residents still cannot go home.
Akoijam rejected the narrative that the state is recovering. "Honestly speaking, I do not buy the idea that peace has returned. By any definition, peace is not merely the absence of violence," he stated. He compared the state of society to medical health, noting that peace requires functional institutions and lives free from fear.
Violence has recently spread into the hill areas. The MP warned that criminals might exploit security gaps. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also visited the hospital but refused to speak with the press.
Tensions boiled over when protesters left bodies of the deceased outside the Chief Minister's bungalow. Police fired tear gas to clear the scene. Those remains were eventually moved to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. Officials locked down Imphal. Barricades now block access at Kangla Gate, Konung Mamang, and Babupara to keep the streets quiet.
