Imphal: Manipur Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam fired back at sexual harassment allegations circulating in the media. He branded reports of misconduct involving 11 Jawaharlal Nehru University students as unverified, intentional, unethical, and illegal. The MP made his stand clear during a late-night visit to Dhanamanjuri University on September 13. He met with students currently staging an indefinite hunger strike over stalled stipends.
Reports suggest these complaints have sat before the JNU Internal Complaints Committee for nearly four months. Akoijam slammed the coverage as a media trial. He stated, "Media trial is condemned by everybody, even in criminal cases or registered cases. However, now it is thriving on it."
The lawmaker claims the reporting reeks of racial bias. He suggested the public response would be far more intense if he hailed from states like Bihar or Uttar Pradesh. Referring to himself as a Chingki professor, he questioned why the public remained quiet regarding the propaganda against him. He insists his record as a parliamentarian speaking out for Manipur makes him a target. Akoijam maintains he has nothing to hide. "I have nothing to hide. The truth will come on my side," he added. He intends to take legal action to clear his name, leaving the final outcome to the courts.
