Imphal: Jawaharlal Nehru University fired Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. He serves as the Congress MP for Inner Manipur. Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit signed the dismissal order on October 9. The university cut ties with him immediately.

Akoijam worked at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within the School of Social Sciences. The university’s Internal Committee investigated him for sexual harassment. Their report pushed for major punishment. The school relied on Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules to hand down the penalty.

Officials reviewed the full report before acting. The order stated: "Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee, the punishment of dismissal from the services of the university is hereby imposed." The university maintains the move followed proper procedure.
