Shillong: Opposition leader Mukul M. Sangma ruled out attempts to topple the Meghalaya government on Friday. He plans to settle scores at the ballot box instead. Sangma said he is currently gathering ground-level feedback to inform his strategy for the 2028 Assembly elections. He wants a clean fight. "I would like to go for a mandate, not a toppling game, and respect the wisdom of the people of the State," he said.
Voters have seen enough since 2018 to judge the results of past choices. Sangma argued that empty rhetoric means nothing if politicians fail to deliver on their promises. Hardships across the state are now influencing public opinion. He believes these struggles will force voters to become more conscious when they cast their ballots in 2028.
Political consolidation remains elusive in the state. Sangma noted that attempts to unite different forces often face sabotage from those currently in power. He dismissed the importance of public political moves, such as confidence motions, stating that the internal state of the system matters more. He did not propose any specific electoral alliances but confirmed he would push for a fresh mandate. He views politics as one of the toughest games around.
