Sümi Leaders Push to Move NSSB Exam Over Harvest Festival Conflict

Kohima: The Sümi Kukami Hoho is pressuring the Nagaland Staff Selection Board to shift the date of the Combined Staff Recruitment Examination. The test is currently set for November 14. This date directly clashes with Ahuna, the traditional harvest festival for the Sümi people. It is a big deal. The Hoho sent a formal representation to the NSSB chairman on October 12.

The organization, which represents village heads and traditional leaders, claims the scheduling conflict puts local candidates in a tough spot. They have to pick between their cultural identity and a career milestone. The state government officially recognizes Ahuna in its cultural calendar. The group argues that youth should not face this choice.

The Hoho insists they do not want to hinder the recruitment process or seek special favors. They acknowledge the board must run fair and transparent tests. Still, they want a new date for the exam. The group urged the board to look at the cultural calendar for future scheduling. As the organization stated, "The preservation of cultural identity and the pursuit of educational and professional opportunities should complement one another rather than compel young people to choose between the two."
