Kohima: Drug abuse is bleeding Nagaland dry. MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso stated on Friday that the state is losing hundreds of crores to the addiction crisis. Substance abuse ruins more than bank accounts. It keeps youth away from church, community leadership, and agriculture.
Dr. Rhutso spoke at the Red Cross Complex in Kohima for the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He called for a shift in public mindset. Society often displays a high "sense of right" but a low "sense of responsibility." He urged those hooked on drugs to seek help, promising that the government will keep their identities and reports strictly confidential.
The threat is growing fast. NUN General Secretary Neiba Kesiezi pointed to the spread of a dangerous synthetic drug known locally as Sunflower. He warned that the police cannot fix this mess on their own. Families must stop shunning users and start offering support.
Recovery advocates Kato Kiba and Kedusu pushed for better treatment options. Kiba argued that locking people in jail does nothing to cure addiction. He called for detoxification and proper rehab instead. Medical experts at the event agreed that early intervention and awareness are the best weapons against the tide of drugs currently hitting the region.
