Aizawl: Mizoram officials want tourists to hold off on travel plans. Relentless rain caused floods and landslides, paralyzing much of the state. The tourism department asked visitors to reschedule trips until the weather breaks to ensure public safety.
Southern Lunglei district took the hardest hit. Nearly 100 families fled their homes in Tlabung after the Khawthlangtuipui River flooded low-lying areas near the border with Bangladesh. Road travel remains treacherous. National Highway 54 is blocked, leaving 200 people stranded at Bualte village.
Crews are working to clear the debris. Fresh mudslides keep stalling progress. Authorities noted, "Although restoration work is underway with earth-moving equipment, recurring rain has repeatedly triggered fresh mudslides, slowing clearance operations."
Commuters face trouble across the state. A massive slide at Ngaizel still clogs the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway. Meanwhile, the swollen Mat River in Serchhip district swallowed up local farmland. The India Meteorological Department recorded 34 mm of rain in Serchhip over the last day, the highest total in Mizoram. Rescue teams continue working as the state stays on high alert.
