Aizawl: Police tracked down and captured 20-year-old Denghmingthanga on Thursday. He had been on the run for three days. The prime suspect in the murder of a 15-year-old girl escaped the Lunglei police station at 1 a.m. Tuesday. He slipped away while held for questioning.
Authorities launched a massive hunt involving police, local leaders, residents, and Young Mizo Association volunteers. Investigators checked CCTV footage, spotting the man heading toward the Rahsi Veng area. Search teams scoured the location and found him hiding at a farm near Vanhne village at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Denghmingthanga and 34-year-old Lalneihkima were originally arrested on August 20. This followed the discovery of the girl's body near a government school in Mualthuam North. The victim had vanished two days before her remains appeared. Officials confirmed the return of the suspect to the station. "He was brought back to Lunglei and produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody," police said.
A constable at the Lunglei station now faces suspension. Officials cited dereliction of duty for the security failure.
