Aizawl: Denghmingthanga fled Lunglei police custody at 1 am on Tuesday, September 1. The 20-year-old murder suspect escaped during interrogation at the Lunglei Police Station. Police had moved the Mualthuam North resident from the district jail on Monday for further questioning. The hunt is on.
Authorities arrested Denghmingthanga and 34-year-old Lalneihkima on August 20. Both men face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the death of a 15-year-old girl. Her body turned up near a school in Mualthuam North on August 5, two days after she vanished. Police state the pair confessed to the crime after heavy questioning.
A massive search operation is currently underway. The Lunglei Sub-Headquarters of the Young Mizo Association joined the search effort by telling local branches to stay alert and monitor their areas. In a statement released Tuesday, the group told the public: "The organisation has directed its local branches to remain vigilant, monitor their respective areas and assist police in tracing the escapee." Residents should contact local YMA leaders or the Lunglei Police Station with any sightings.

Investigators tracking the fugitive report he was last spotted heading toward the Rahsi Veng area of Lunglei. The suspect escaped in handcuffs and was shoeless when he fled the station.
Court records now specify the charges against the two men include sections 103(1) and 140(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. As the manhunt intensifies, the Young Mizo Association has issued a warning to the public, telling residents not to take the law into their own hands or attempt to attack the escapee if they find him.

The opposition Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee slammed the Zoram People's Movement government on Wednesday over the escape. The group labeled the incident a result of inefficiency and negligence within the Home Department.
The Youth Congress claims that 74 prisoners have broken out of jails across the state between 2022 and August 2026. They noted that a significant portion of these escapes occurred during the current administration's two-and-a-half-year tenure, including convicts serving life sentences for rape and murder.
