Murder suspect breaks out of Lunglei police custody

Aizawl: Denghmingthanga fled Lunglei police custody at 1 am on Tuesday, September 1. The 20-year-old murder suspect escaped during interrogation at the Lunglei Police Station. Police had moved the Mualthuam North resident from the district jail on Monday for further questioning. The hunt is on.

Authorities arrested Denghmingthanga and 34-year-old Lalneihkima on August 20. Both men face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the death of a 15-year-old girl. Her body turned up near a school in Mualthuam North on August 5, two days after she vanished. Police state the pair confessed to the crime after heavy questioning.

A massive search operation is currently underway. The Lunglei Sub-Headquarters of the Young Mizo Association joined the search effort by telling local branches to stay alert and monitor their areas. In a statement released Tuesday, the group told the public: "The organisation has directed its local branches to remain vigilant, monitor their respective areas and assist police in tracing the escapee." Residents should contact local YMA leaders or the Lunglei Police Station with any sightings.
