Shillong: Veteran Garo author Llewellyn R. Marak is dead. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed the news on September 15. The writer served as a cultural guardian for his people. He earned recognition from both state and Central governments for his decades of work.
Marak penned more than 20 books covering Garo history and traditions. His bibliography includes titles like Balpakram and Dikki & Bandi. Many of his manuscripts sit unpublished today. Sangma praised his contributions, calling him a "true Matgrik among Garo writers."
The Chief Minister visited Marak at RC Road in Tura on December 23, 2025. Sangma noted the writer's deep humility and his "passion for A'chik culture" during their meeting. The loss hits the A'chik community hard.
Sangma offered condolences to the surviving family. He prayed for the writer to rest in peace.
