Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma secured the space by repurposing the former official bungalow of the Urban Affairs Minister. The minister gave up the property to house vendors. This specific site serves as a template for wider city management. "Let me reiterate, this would not have been possible without the cooperation of every single stakeholder," Sangma said.
Sangma acknowledged the friction behind the move. Managing public spaces and individual incomes creates difficult choices. He thanked the Urban Affairs Minister for his large-heartedness in putting citizens first. The government intends to open more sites across Shillong. These zones give vendors formal spots to work while clearing up pedestrian traffic and improving the overall look of the city.
