Shillong: The Meghalaya government is pushing ahead with its urban redevelopment plan in Khyndai Lad. West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh confirmed on Friday that the relocation drive aims to move street vendors into organized spaces rather than simply pushing them out. The project, led by the Urban Affairs Department, seeks to balance the needs of residents, visitors, and hawkers alike.
Lyngdoh claimed he played a key role in clearing the area. "I was instrumental in getting the entire stretch vacated," he said. He insisted the government provides better facilities at the new locations. These sites include water supply, electricity, and washrooms. The shelters are built to withstand bad weather, protecting sellers from the elements.
Critics argue the area has become too noisy because of recent cultural performances and public activities. Lyngdoh dismissed these complaints by pointing to the shifting public mood. He noted that residents originally complained the area was too quiet after the vendors left. The government maintains that the final goal is a pedestrian-friendly space that creates a vibrant environment for the city.
