Guwahati: Sattriya legend Gopiram Bargayan Burabhakat died Monday, September 14, at age 103. Assam minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed the death on X. The artist served as the Budha Bhakta of Sri Sri Uttara Kamalabari Satra. He stood as a pillar of traditional culture.
Bargayan mastered multiple disciplines. He excelled in Sattriya Ojapali, devotional singing, dance, and acting. He also held deep knowledge of religious scripture recitation. These skills defined his long career. He remained a central figure at the Satra for decades.
Pegu hailed him as a living legend. The minister noted that his life work enriched Assam's Vaishnavite roots. The loss is immense. "His passing is an irreplaceable loss for the world of Sattriya culture," Pegu said. He offered condolences to the family and prayed for the artist's soul.
The death marks the end of an era. The state lost a vital custodian of its performing arts. His work helped keep the ancient traditions alive for new generations.
