Imphal: Architects and local officials met at Leiba Khuman Multipurpose Hall in Thana Awang Leikai today. They aimed to draft the Manipur Model Unified Building Bye-Laws 2024. The Manipur Architects Forum organized the event alongside the Mayang Imphal Municipal Council. The Town Planning Department provided oversight for the project.
MLA Kongkham Robindro served as chief guest. He stood before roughly 100 participants to warn against the dangers of current development patterns. Unplanned construction currently triggers constant drainage failures and water logging when rains hit. Robindro framed the situation as a long-term fight for the next generation. He noted: "The present initiative should not be viewed merely as an effort to formulate another set of rules, but as a necessary step towards ensuring planned urban development and protecting the interests of future generations."
The legislator linked modern demolition drives to prior rule-breaking. He insisted that better planning today stops tomorrow's evictions. A new 30-year roadmap for Mayang Imphal is already in the works. This plan includes a new municipal office and a Rural Self Employment Training Institute.
Key attendees included MAF President Geetkumar Nepram, Ningthongbam Benju, and various caretaker chairpersons. Asem Radhamani, Leihaothabam Nonibala, Thoudam Pratap, and Yumnam Jamuna represented the local municipal councils. The group called for a team effort to fix the current mess. They need architects, civil groups, and technical experts to turn these ideas into reality.
