Imphal: Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met at Hotel Imphal today to celebrate the first Foundation Day of the Manipur Electricity Regulatory Commission. The event focused on building a power sector that prioritizes the needs of the consumer. It is a big job. The Governor described electricity as a primary driver for industrial growth and social progress across the state.
Bhalla pointed to the national Viksit Bharat 2047 vision as a goal for the state. He credited field staff and engineers for keeping the lights on in tough conditions. He told the commission to keep up its high standards. "The occasion was an opportunity not only to celebrate the Commission's achievements over the past year but also to reflect on its expanding responsibilities in ensuring a transparent, efficient and accountable power sector," Bhalla said.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh echoed these calls for reform. He noted that rising demand from homes and businesses creates new hurdles. The state government pledged its full support to the commission as it works to fix these problems. Chief Secretary Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel and MnERC Chairperson Soubam Ibopishak Singh also joined the ceremony, which included the release of a commemorative souvenir.
Established under Section 82 of the Electricity Act 2003, the MnERC operates as an independent body. It holds the power to set tariffs, grant licenses, and settle disputes. The group also tracks power procurement and pushes for renewable energy use. The mission remains constant: ensure quality and reliability for every consumer in Manipur.
