Kohima: Longleng officials are cracking down on town sanitation. The Ward Waste Management Committee approved a shift to mandatory door-to-door waste collection. Every household must now sort trash into two bins. The new program starts immediately.
Collection trucks hit the streets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Crews will stop in each ward for 20 minutes between 5 am and 9 am. Residents will pay a monthly user fee of Rs 50 to cover these services. The committee will reserve Rs 10 of every fee for its own operations. Payments can be made via a QR code or directly at the Administrator's office.
Non-payment will carry consequences. Authorities plan to withhold essential documents and public distribution services until residents settle their accounts. The committee will also penalize littering, improper dumping, and burning of waste under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. The rules specifically target the disposal of grass, mud, and animal waste.
To encourage recycling, the Urban Local Body will buy segregated plastic waste. They set the price at Rs 10 per kilogram. Additional Deputy Commissioner Thungchanbemo Tungoe led the meeting to finalize these operational changes. The committee intends to "identify waste collection points, assess the number of households in each ward and submit the details to the administration" to streamline the process. A complaint cell is also opening at the Administrator's office to manage service disruptions.
