Guwahati: A leopard pounced on Nakul Goraik while he walked through the Lakribam Tea Estate in Tingkhong, Assam. The victim suffered serious injuries and now receives treatment at the Tingkhong Tea Estate hospital. Danger stalks the workers. Fear has paralyzed the community.
The attack occurred on the same day a leopard chased two men on a motorcycle. Residents report seeing two cats, one large and one small, roaming near the Khowang Range Forest Office. For three months, these animals have snatched cattle and goats from the local area. Workers now refuse to show up for their shifts.
Locals blame the Forest Department for the ongoing violence. They claim officials failed to show up until late at night following the mauling of Goraik. Angry residents demand the department intervene before another person ends up in the hospital. One local stated, "the Forest Department has failed to take adequate action despite repeated incidents." The pressure is mounting on the authorities to secure the estate.

Goraik, 42, took the brunt of the assault on Sunday night. The animal tore into his shoulders, hand, and leg before he managed to scare it off. He described the encounter as a blur: It appeared out of nowhere and leapt at me. I tumbled three times before I could even understand what was happening.
Goraik credited his survival to his own noise. I started shouting as loudly as I could. It was only after I raised a hue and cry that the leopard fled into the bushes.
