Kohima: Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) officials and local partners gathered at ZAPO Hall in Zuketsa on August 29. The event aimed to bridge the gap between residents and the justice system. It drew 150 community leaders, including council members, youth, and students.
Neiko Akami, NSLSA Member Secretary, stated that financial hardship must not block access to the courts. He noted, "Legal Services Authorities provide free legal assistance to eligible persons, including help in understanding legal rights, preparing legal documents and accessing legal remedies." The state currently operates 11 district Front Offices staffed by lawyers and volunteers to handle these matters for free.
Akami pointed to the success of Lok Adalats, which settled over 600 cases this year alone. He also outlined protections for jail inmates via the Legal Aid Defense Counsel scheme and the Under-Trial Review Committee. Beyond criminal law, the NSLSA provides relief for victims of motor vehicle accidents and human-wildlife conflicts.
Kilemsungla Jamir, Secretary of DLSA Phek, shifted the focus to the POCSO Act. She warned that sexual abuse often comes from people within a child's circle of trust. Jamir told attendees to watch for behavioral changes in children and report suspected abuse immediately, promising that whistleblower identities remain protected.
Consumer rights took center stage during the final sessions. Inspector Juwe Pojar warned local traders that selling goods without packaging licenses invites fines. She reminded shoppers that they have the legal right to inspect verification certificates on weighing scales and never pay more than the Maximum Retail Price.
Retainer Lawyer Sekhotso Rokha added that consumers must keep cash memos and product labels to prove claims in disputes, such as food poisoning or medical negligence. He specifically warned against merchants adding hidden fees labeled as GST. The event was chaired by ZAPO General Secretary Nyitso Therie, with opening remarks provided by ZAPO President Keduitsolhi Wetsah.
