Kohima: Opium addiction is fueling a massive drug crisis in Phek district. Legal Aid Defense Counsel Vethothi Vero confirmed that opium makes up 49 percent of all local substance abuse cases. More than 1,000 youths in the district headquarters are currently caught in the trap of drug use.
Vero addressed attendees at a legal awareness event held at ZAPO Hall in Zuketsa on Saturday. The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, Phek District Legal Authority, the Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, and the Zuketsa Area Public Organization hosted the meeting.
The situation is dire. "The society is no longer alien to the presence and use of illicit drugs... This is a vicious cycle with adverse consequences for families and society," Vero said. He urged village leaders and youth groups to intervene before the problem spreads further.
State law hits hard. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 mandates prison sentences reaching up to 20 years for severe violations. Despite the threat of jail, officials are pushing for a softer touch. Vero encouraged the public to support addicts and report illegal trade to local police.
Help exists for those ready to quit. Professionals now offer de-addiction services and Opioid Substitution Therapy. Addicts can beat the habit with the right support, and authorities are pushing locals to seek this help immediately.
