Agartala: The Left Front, led by the CPI(M), will field candidates in every seat during the upcoming Village Committee elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council region. Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition, announced the decision following signals from the state government that the delayed polls will likely take place in September.
Chaudhury welcomed the move after the Supreme Court intervened to address the lack of elections over the past decade. He argued that the absence of elected committees fostered corruption and unconstitutional practices at the local level, making the vote essential for restoring public accountability.
The Left leader also scrutinized Tipra Motha for its role in the delay. While acknowledging the party's legal efforts to trigger the election process, he noted their participation in the BJP-led government during the period when polls were stalled. "They cannot escape responsibility for the delay, as they remained in power and enjoyed its benefits," Chaudhury stated.
He criticized both the BJP and Tipra Motha for prioritizing political interests over the needs of rural residents. The Left Front aims to win back control of local councils, with Chaudhury emphasizing, "We have decided to contest all seats with the primary objective of keeping corrupt forces out of the Village Committees and safeguarding the interests of the villages."
