Kuki Civil Society Groups Threaten Blockade Over Seized Relief Goods

Imphal: The Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations in Ukhrul issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the district administrations of Imphal East, Kangpokpi, and Ukhrul. They demand an immediate stop to the burning and seizure of relief supplies destined for Kuki-Zo areas. Failure to act will trigger a three-day counter economic blockade starting at midnight on July 23.

The group reports losing nearly 10 lakh rupees worth of commodities to these attacks. Incidents occurred at Wunghon, Saijang, and Sokvao. The committee claims the Officer-in-Charge of Yaingangpokpi Police Station is involved. They allege these acts persist despite promises made by the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul during a June 25 meeting.

The committee stated, "The Kuki-Zo community had exercised restraint throughout the ongoing ethnic conflict but cautioned that such restraint should not be interpreted as weakness." Meanwhile, a blockade on National Highway-2 at Senapati and Kanglatongbi has lasted nearly a month.

Groups accuse the Manipur government and the Centre of failing to intervene. The committee expects the state to clear the routes immediately. They warned that local authorities will bear full responsibility for any fallout from the upcoming protest.
