Kangpokpi Congress Pushes New Commissioner to Tackle Refugee and Supply Crisis

Imphal: The Sadar Hills District Congress Committee issued a formal list of demands to new Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner Hemant Kumar on August 25. Led by president Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip, the group wants immediate relief for internally displaced persons and a fix for the Imphal-Dimapur highway gridlock. Supply chains are failing. The group warned that the ongoing blockade on the highway drives up prices and cripples daily-wage workers, traders, and shopkeepers across all communities.

Congress leaders are demanding that the Special Intensive Revision for 2026 include every eligible voter, regardless of whether they live in relief camps or private housing. They insist the government stop the Census 2026-27 process until these displaced families get back on their feet. The committee argues that access to welfare should remain uniform for everyone, regardless of current residence.

Security concerns persist. The committee flagged specific trouble in the Twilang area along IT Road and the Leimakhong-Tingkai belt in south-west Sadar Hills. They want the administration to demand transparency in legal proceedings for victims of the violence that started May 3, 2023. "Continued violence and insecurity in the border areas could deepen fear and mistrust among civilians and further complicate efforts to restore peace," the committee stated.

Officials must now handle rising border tensions between Kangpokpi and Senapati. Congress offered to host dialogue between groups and asked for an immediate meeting with civil society leaders and political parties to find common ground. They want local leaders to reject violence and commit to peaceful coexistence across Manipur.
