Manipur Commission Demands Official Recognition for Makhan Relief Camp

Imphal: The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights wants the Kangpokpi Deputy Commissioner to recognize the Makhan Internally Displaced Persons Relief Camp. Officials issued the recommendation on July 15 after inspecting the site on July 10. Kids are suffering. The camp opened between May 14 and 15, 2026, amid local communal violence. It currently houses 173 people across 62 families, including 84 children.

Families rely on community handouts because the government ignores the site. This lack of official standing blocks access to healthcare, education, and basic nutrition. Chairperson Keisam Pradipkumar said the Commission found children face major barriers to services. “The lack of institutional support has affected their access to education, healthcare, nutrition, child protection services and other basic entitlements guaranteed under various government welfare schemes,” the report stated.

The commission wants the district to move the camp to a safer location. Residents prefer the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Regional Campus if officials approve the move. The district must provide food, clean water, and mental health support. Authorities also need to connect eligible families with the Mission Vatsalya Sponsorship Scheme.
