Imphal: The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) wants the Manipur government to keep a tight watch on state highways. They want officials to guarantee that the August 28 order to clear all obstructions stays in force. This push comes after the Supreme Court closed a petition on September 28 that sought the reopening of National Highway-2.
The state government informed the high court that NH-2 is now open for essential goods. Officials also reported progress on clearing other national and state routes. KWOHR filed the case back in July under Article 32 to restore supplies to Kangpokpi district. The group claims long-term blockades starved residents of food, fuel, and vital medicine.
KWOHR alleges that medical staff and ambulances struggled to reach patients during the supply crunch. The organization stated, "The reopening of NH-2 was an important development" but warned that ground-level enforcement remains the top priority. They noted that their claims regarding the specific impact on local hospitals and medical access have not been independently verified.
The group also challenged the September 26 tripartite talks between the United Naga Council, the Manipur government, and the Centre. They highlighted that no Kuki representatives participated in those discussions. Furthermore, they questioned how the government manages compensation for families hit by recent violence. While they praised civil society groups for providing aid during the crisis, they insisted that the state must ensure emergency services and essential supplies travel without interference.
