Guwahati: Authorities in Kamrup Metropolitan have launched a new initiative to strictly regulate the weight of school bags, aiming to reduce the physical strain on students. Inspector of Schools Dipika Choudhury issued the directive this week, signaling that institutions failing to meet these standards will face potential disciplinary action.
Under the new enforcement framework, weight limits are tailored to grade levels. Students in Classes I and II cannot carry bags exceeding 1.5 kg. The limit is set between 2 kg and 3 kg for Classes III to V, 4 kg for Classes VI and VII, 4.5 kg for Classes VIII and IX, and a maximum of 5 kg for Class X. These rules apply to all private, government, and provincialised schools in the district.
To support these changes, schools must inform students daily about the specific books required for class, preventing unnecessary loads. The directive further prohibits the use of supplementary materials outside the approved SCERT or NCERT curriculum. Educators are also tasked with teaching students proper carrying techniques, such as using both shoulder straps.
District-level teams will monitor compliance through regular inspections and surprise visits to ensure these standards are met. Inspector Choudhury noted that school heads are ultimately responsible for enforcement. Officials stated that any institution found flouting the norms would be liable for appropriate action.
