Guwahati: Jadumoni Dutta hit the jackpot this weekend. His film, Juiphool, scored the Rajat Kamal for Best Assamese Film at the 72nd National Film Awards. The movie centers on two mothers trapped in the violence along the Assam-Nagaland border. Residents there keep watch all night and sleep during the day. It captures the raw tension of living in a conflict zone.
Assam also grabbed a win in the documentary category. Life in Loom earned Edmon Ranson the award for Best Cinematography. The project follows traditional weavers across Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Ladakh, and Uttar Pradesh. It tells their story in English, Tamil, Hindi, Assamese, and Bengali.
Big names dominated the major categories. Article 370 secured the Best Feature Film title, while Yami Gautam won Best Actress for the same project. The Best Actor award went to both Mammootty for Bramayugam and Kartik Aaryan for Chandu Champion. Randeep Hooda picked up Best Debut Director for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. The committee noted a broad range of hits this year, including Kalki 2898 AD, Amaran, Pushpa: The Rule, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and Stree 2. Bhangaar won Best Non-Feature Film and Ram-Nami took home Best Documentary.
