Imphal: Sunita claimed the Best Manipuri Feature Film prize at the 72nd National Film Awards. Director Ajit Yumnam and producer Yumnam Brojen Singh accepted the honor from President Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony took place September 22 near the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. Lead actor Naramada Sougaijam and supporting actor Binita Yumnam represented the production.
The film follows a visually impaired woman seeking education and independence. President Murmu praised regional cinema during her address. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting aims to boost these local stories. Sougaijam later told reporters, "I am pleased that my performance had contributed to the film's success at the National Film Awards." She plans to keep promoting the local industry and believes its writers and directors hold their own against any regional competition.
Manipur played a role in the judging process too. James Khangenbam sat on the Central Jury for the Non-Feature Film Category. Thokchom Jimmy served on the Eastern Panel for the Feature Film Category. Dignitaries at the event included Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State L. Murugan. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel also attended the event.
